"Mandatory vocal rest" has sidelined Janelle Monae, who announced today (Nov. 5) she has postponed three dates on her current tour.
According to a post on her website, the R&B artist has been forced to give fans in California and Arizona a rain check to avoid potential damage to her vocal cords.
The diagnosis, Monae says, "truly leaves me heartsick and shaken because I live for this: connecting with you and giving you a one of a kind concert experience.
"But alas, apparently even the most expertly designed android breaks down sometimes and must recharge," she concedes.
Monae is currently touring behind "The Electric Lady," her second studio album. It debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 last September, selling 47,000 copies -- a personal best for the singer. She promoted the album with a spot on "Saturday Night Live" last month, days after earning Billboard's Rising Star Award.
The affected tour dates -- including shows Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (Nov. 5-7) in Anaheim, San Diego and Phoenix -- have not yet been rescheduled. Monae is set to return to the stage Nov. 9 in Dallas.
