Nearly 15 years after the No. 62-peaking "Just Don't Give a F***" introduced Eminem to Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, the Detroit rapper posts his first No. 1 on the list.
"The Monster," featuring Rihanna, opens at No. 1 as it exploded across all three of the chart's metrics in its first week of availability. According to Nielsen BDS, the cut reached 36.6 million listeners in the Oct. 30 - Nov. 5 tracking week and earned 2.3 million U.S. streams Oct. 28 - Nov. 3. Digitally, it sold 327,000 first-week downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan, enough for a No. 1 debut on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs and Rap Digital Songs
Notably, of Eminem's so far eight top 10 hits on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, five of them came since the tally revised its methodology in October of 2012. Since then, the chart now incorporates digital sales and streaming data, in addition to monitored airplay. Previous to the revision, Eminem's singles generally charted much lower on the chart, as the tally was overwhelmingly powered by airplay. In turn, because Eminem's history at R&B/hip-hop radio is relatively weak, his fortunes on the overall Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart were diminished. In total, Eminem has charted 42 entries on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, stretching back to his 1998 debut with "Just Don't Give a F***."
Just how little R&B/hip-hop airplay does Eminem receive? On this week's R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, which ranks the top 50 most-heard songs on R&B/hip-hop radio, Eminem is no where to be found. So far, none of the songs released from "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" have charted on the list. He last visited the chart with "No Love," which peaked at No. 59 in late 2010. He's only charted five top 10 hits on the airplay chart, out of 31 entries.
Comparatively, on the Radio Songs chart, which monitors airplay across all genres of radio stations, Eminem debuts at No. 31 with "The Monster." It's the second Radio Songs hit for Eminem from "The Marshall Mathers LP 2," following "Berzerk," which reached No. 41 in October.
Eminem gets the bulk of his airplay from mainstream top 40, rhythmic and rap radio stations. Currently, "The Monster" is at No. 27 on the Pop Songs chart (which monitors mainstream top 40 airplay), No. 19 on Rhythmic airplay and No. 17 on Rap airplay.
In addition to ranking at No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart this week with "The Monster," Eminem also holds down the Nos. 6-8 slots with "Berzerk," "Survival" and "Rap God," respectively.
Last week's No. 1, Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home," featuring Majid Jordan, falls to No. 2. Jay Z's "Holy Grail," featuring Justin Timberlake, dips 2-3, and Mike WiLL Made-It's "23" holds at No. 4. Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" falls 3-5, while YG's "My Hitta" is pushed backwards 5-9, despite an overall gain in chart points.
Chris Brown's "Love More" closes out the top 10, forced down 7-10 despite a gain.
Just outside the top 10, Michael Jackson's "Thriller" re-enters at No. 14, thanks to strong digital sales and streams caused by the Halloween holiday. The classic cut peaked at No. 3 on the list on March 10, 1984 during its initial 14-week chart run. Now a staple during Halloween celebrations, "Thriller" rose 51% to 35,000 downloads and 82% to 2 million domestic streams. "Thriller" concurrently re-enters the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 42. It originally peaked at No. 4.
Over on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, Drake's "Nothing Was the Same" is steady at No. 1 for a fifth non-consecutive week, selling another 38,000 (down 13%). Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience (2 of 2)" rises one rung to No. 2 (20,000; down 20%) and the Robert Glasper Experiment's "Black Radio 2" debuts at No. 3 with 15,000.
DJ Khaled's "Suffering From Success" drops 2-4 (9,000; down 66%) and TLC's "20" slips a slot to No. 5 with just under 9,000 (down 57%).
